Whole Body Detox with Sand Packs
A whole body detox runs the gamut from the simplest and easiest – the detox foot pads – to the most complex and arduous – Dr. Gray’s 2-year cleansing regimen which includes daily skin brushing, psyllium ingestion ad nauseam, and colon hydrotherapy. But none is more appealing than the sand pack -- potentially the most ritualistic and spiritual whole body detox, appealing to the nature-lover and mystic in all of us. The ingredients are supplied by the earth along her coastlines: sand, salt water, fresh air and the fire of the sun. The elements of creation. The elements of detoxification.
Important Note: People with high blood pressure or who are at risk of stroke, clots or with cardiac conditions should consult their physician before attempting a sand pack. It can be quite an intense experience and should be done only by those in good health. First, for your delightful whole body detox experience, select a beach where the sand is ‘original’, that is, where the shoreline has not been augmented or rebuilt with sand imported from a pit or inland somewhere. Edgar Cayce claimed in a reading that the sand in Virginia Beach, Virginia, contained high amounts of trace gold, an element which is said to promote renewal and regeneration, a great addition to cellular detoxing. But those beaches have been rebuilt with imported yellow, coarse sand and likely no longer retain that element. Second, you will need at least one other person to assist you in doing a sand pack. Two or three others are even better. With a small group, each person can enjoy the benefits of the pack over time, along with making the procedure for each one much easier. It would probably be best to focus on doing only one pack per day, as the one receiving that day would need to rest afterwards, rather than turn around and help another person with their pack. Note: Choose a day when there has been no rainfall for at least two or three days, allowing the surface sand to be completely dry as well as energized by the sun. Plan to do the pack after 3 p.m. so that the sand is warmed and energized but the sun’s rays are no longer harmful. What you will need to bring: - 2. A piece of 2x4 about 2’-3’ long
- 3. Beach blankets or chairs for the helper(s)
- 4. Good water to drink to stay hydrated
The person receiving the sand pack may wear a bathing suit. A 2-piece bathing suit is best for women, allowing the sand to work through as much of the skin as possible. The helper(s) will be doing a lot of work and would do well to have a patient, reverent attitude. While primarily a physical detox, a sand pack can also be a very spiritually or emotionally releasing experience.
How to prepare the sand pack for your whole body detox
- 1. Select a remote beach location some distance from other people, where the earth is fairly level.
- 2. The person receiving the sand pack immerses him/herself in the ocean, getting wet from head to toe.
- 3. At the same time, the helper(s) use the 2x4 to level a swath of sand with an east-west orientation and as long as the receiver is tall.
- 4. The receiver lies down along the swath with his/her head toward the east, with one of the towels laid out under the head. The ends of the towel come up around the face to protect the skin from sunburn.
- 5. The helper(s) push some sand up under the receiver’s neck, lower back and knees on both sides of the body until the receiver indicates a desirable level of comfort and support on those spots, wiggling from time to time to nestle into the sand.
- 6. Beginning with the feet, the helper(s) scoop a handful of surface sand and release it slowly over the foot. (With two helpers, they should work in tandem pouring sand on the same body part from both sides.) Only warm surface sand should be scooped from the top few inches of beach or dune.
- 7. Apply handfuls of sand over the ankle, others over the shin, then back to the foot, ankle, shin until they are completely covered with at least a half inch of sand.
- 8. Continue with a handful at a time over the knee, thigh and groin until covered.
- 9. Then the abdomen and chest until covered.
- 10. Then the hands, arms, upper arms and shoulders until they are covered.
NOTE: Do not cover the throat with sand. Stop at the collar bone. Once the receiver is completely covered, check the time, allowing no more than 10-15 minutes for the first sand pack. The receiver may need to get up even before that, which is ok for the first time. After two or more sand packs, the time can be increased to 20 minutes or even a half hour. You can see that applying one handful of sand at a time will take quite a bit of time. With helper(s) proceeding prayerfully and the receiver focusing on releasing all that detracts from living the life desired, the whole body detox ritual takes on a beautiful power to transform. The fire of the sun refracts through the crystalline sand, stimulating release of drosses from the cells. The salt water is cleansing and in balance with the body’s cellular salinity. This ritual is almost like a sacrament, compliments of Mother Nature. While the minutes tick by, the helper(s) set up around the body, protecting it from passers-by. Besides keeping watch, they can meditate and/or pray, chant or read inspirational material for the receiver and the release process. When the time is up or the receiver needs to get up, the receiver should move slowly. You will see dark streaks in the sand on the body. These are the toxins which the skin has eliminated! Indeed it is a "whole body detox" because your entire body has been blanketed with sand which has enabled a powerful and thorough detox process to work its magic. The receiver moves slowly back to the ocean to immerse again in the salt water from head to toe, rinsing off the sand and letting go of the old. The receiver will need to drink as much pure water to continue internal flushing and hydration after this exhausting experience. Depending on the participants, they may want to offer a prayer of thanks to the elements for the experience. To make the most of the detox experience, the receiver would do well to rest for the remainder of the day and reflect on the events during the sand pack. Some people have a relaxing physical response to their whole body detox experience, others find it stimulating. Many drift off to other times, even past lives. Some have had out-of-body experiences. Whatever your particular sand pack experience is like, at the very least you will feel wonderfully light and full of gratitude, perhaps even awe, at the remarkable gifts of the earth to heal.
